ROANOKE SOCCER TEAM TAKES TITLE

Josh Davidson scored two goals Sunday to lead the Roanoke Star Under-9 team to a 3-1 victory over the Parkersburg All-Stars and the championship of the Taco Bell Classic soccer tournament in Parkersburg, W.Va.

Matthew Moore and Danny Karbassiyoon each had four goals in Roanoke's four wins in the tournamenmt. Goalie Shane Draper recorded two shutouts behind a defense that was anchored by Will Ross.

In other soccer:

The Roanoke Star Under-13 White team finished second at the Furniture City Classic in High Point, N.C., losing 2-1 to Charlottesville.

Bill Logan scored the Star White's goal in the championship game on an assist by Wesley Savage. Logan finished with three goals in the tournament. Rob Jennings, Adam Childers, Andrew Haynie, Landon Moore and Logan Self also added goals.

The second-place finish qualified the team for the National Triple Crown Tournament next July in Steamboat Springs, Colorado.

The Roanoke Star Under-19 White team came back from a 3-0 halftime deficit to beat the Richmond Strikers 4-3 and claim third place in the Virginia Cup soccer tournament in Richmond.

Keith Mattson scored two goals and Burke Rucker and Jamie Bell had one apiece for Roanoke.

The Star Under-16 White team also placed third, beating Virginia Beach 1-0 on Sunday.

Stephen Kunkle scored the game's only goal on an assist by William Watkins.

Tate Duus, David Levan and George Rivera anchored a stout Roanoke defense that permitted only one goal in the tournament. Roanoke's loss came in an overtime shootout. Goalkeeper Michael Creasey recorded three shutouts in the tournament.
