'TREK' GUESTS STAR IN THEIR OWN GALAXIES

Ever since "Trek"-classic went on the air in 1966, fans of the show and its spinoffs have been fascinated by the series' guest stars.

Roger C. Carmel is a good example. He won viewers over with his mischievous portrayal of con man Harry Mudd in two "Trek"-classic episodes and, until his death in 1986, proved a popular regular on the convention circuit.

Bruce Hyde also appeared in just two "Trek"-classic episodes ("Naked Time" and "The Conscience of the King"), yet he remains a convention staple.

So what are some of the more popular "Trek" guests up to these days? Here's a rundown:

Andreas Katsulas, Romulan Cmdr. Tomalak in several "Next Gen" episodes, plays the mysterious one-armed man in the hit film "The Fugitive."

Teri Hatcher, who appeared in the "Next Gen" episode "The Outrageous Okona," may fly to stardom in the soon-to-premiere ABC series "Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman." The show also features Roy Brocksmith (of the "Next Gen" episode "Peak Performance") in a recurring role.

John de Lancie, aka Q, can be seen in Peter Weir's "Fearless," playing Jeff Bridges' friend and fellow plane-crash victim. The film will open in late October.

Famke Jannsen, lovely Kamala from the "Next Gen" episode "The Perfect Mate," has the title role in "Model By Day," which will premiere in October or November on Fox.

Suzie Plakson, "Next Gen's" late K'Ehleyr, plays Maggie on the revamped CBS comedy "Love & War."

Michelle Forbes, who may yet trek again as Ensign Ro, joins Juliette Lewis and Brad Pitt in the film "Kalifornia," which will open nationwide Sept. 3.

Caryl Struyken, "Next Gen's" lovable Mr. Homm, reprises his role as Lurch in the upcoming "Addams Family Values," which finds Christopher Lloyd - Kruge of "Trek III" - back as Fester.

Several big-name guest stars have already been signed for the upcoming seasons of "Next Gen" and "Deep Space Nine."

Look for Ben Vereen, LeVar Burton's co-star in the 1977 miniseries "Roots," to portray Geordi's father on "Next Gen." Also scheduled to make an appearance is basketball superstar James Worthy, who will play a Klingon.

Louise Fletcher and Philip Anglim return in "DS9's" three-part season opener, along with veteran actor Frank Langella and Steven Weber of "Wings."

And various "Trek" regulars have been working on non-"Trek" projects.

Patrick Stewart pops up as King Richard in "Robin Hood: Men In Tights," currently in theaters. The USA Network will air the extended version of "Dune," with Stewart's part somewhat expanded, on Sept. 18.

And "Patrick Stewart Narrates `The Planets,"' an audiovisual exploration of our solar system, beams into video stores Sept. 28 on BMG Video.

George Takei is before the cameras in Los Angeles shooting "Vanished," in which he stars as Chung-Hee Park, the general who took control of Korea after a coup in the late '70s.

Denise Crosby has completed "Max," a family drama shot in Vancouver, Canada. No release date yet.

William Shatner is working on the first "TekWar" telemovie, to air in syndication.

Colm Meaney appears in "The Snapper," directed by Stephen Frears and due in theaters in October.
