July's $8.71 million was 0.3 percent higher than $8.68 million in the same month last year but was off 26 percent from $11 million in June.
Nearly $4.4 million was reported from Roanoke County in July, of which $1.7 million was for construction of 25 single-family homes. Roanoke issued permits worth nearly $2.8 million and Salem had $1.4 million.
