ROANOKE VALLEY ECONOMIC INDICATORS

The value of Roanoke Valley building permits held level in July compared with a year earlier.

July's $8.71 million was 0.3 percent higher than $8.68 million in the same month last year but was off 26 percent from $11 million in June.

Nearly $4.4 million was reported from Roanoke County in July, of which $1.7 million was for construction of 25 single-family homes. Roanoke issued permits worth nearly $2.8 million and Salem had $1.4 million.

A report from the F.W. Dodge Division of McGraw-Hill suggests a drop in building permits later this year. Dodge said the value of contracts for future construction in the valley fell 52 percent in July. - Staff report
