BABER WINS SPOT IN U.S. SENIOR AM

Ned Baber of Roanoke fired a 1-over-par 73 Monday at the Country Club of Virginia in Richmond to win a berth in the 39th U.S. Senior Amateur men's golf championship to be held Sept. 20-25 at Farmington Country Club in Charlottesville.

Moss Beecroft of Newport News, the 1992 State Seniors amateur champion, was the qualifying medalist with a 71. Jim Kite Jr. of Wolftown and Pete Darling of Richmond (72) tied for second at 72.

Baber claimed the fourth and final spot in the 62-player qualifying field.

In other golf:

Ryan Ketron scored 21 points under an adjusted Modified Stableford scoring system to pace William Byrd to victory in the first Big Orange Invitational high school tournament at Blue Hills.

Byrd finished with 53 points in the format that awarded five points for an eagle; three for a birdie; one for a par; zero for a bogey and minus-two for double bogey or worse.

Brookville, led by Wes Cothran's 19 points, finished second with 48 points. Martinsville (26) was third, Fieldale-Collinsville (24) fourth and Northside (22) fifth.

Mike King and Chad Smith each shot 81 to lead Cave Spring to victory in the Roanoke Valley District tournament at Thorn Spring Golf Club in Pulaski.

Scott Bailey and Chad Williams added 82s for the Knights who totaled 326.

Patrick Henry was second with 330, followed by Pulaski County (342), Franklin County (360) and William Fleming (468).

Sanders Wilhelm of PH was the medalist with a 7-over-par 79.

Junior Nick Varney fired a 3-over 70 to lead Glenvar to a Pioneer District win over Highland. Ray Harrell added a 76 for the Highlanders, who had a 303 total and won by 43 shots.

Mitch Reed shot a 41 over nine holes to earn medalist honors and lead Giles to a victory over Radford at Round Meadow Country Club in Christiansburg. Giles finished at 175; Radford totaled 202.
