Sean Feary scored the winning goal with 37 seconds left in the overtime. The first-year player kicked in a rebound from 17 yards after Damian Silvera's shot hit the post. Silvera gave the Cavaliers another goal with just under a minute to play in the second overtime period.
Another first-year player, Mike Fisher, started the scoring for UVa with a goal in the middle of the second half. Five minutes later, the Golden Panthers' Steve Ralston tied it.
The Cavaliers outshot Florida International 32-11.
In the tournament's other game, Connecticut defeated George Mason 3-2.
Virginia takes on Connecticut in the final this afternoon at 3:30. George Mason and Florida International meet at 1 p.m.
Virginia Tech defeated Mars Hill 11-0 in the first round of the Virginia Tech/Lanzera men's soccer tournament in Blacksburg.
Jason Entlich scored four goals, three in the first half, and had an assist for the Hokies (1-0).
Rodney Walsh added two goals for Tech, which had seven players score. Brian Bulger recorded the shutout.
In the opening game, Monmouth defeated VMI 2-1 on an overtime goal by Ali Rose.
Tech play Monmouth in the championship game today at 3 p.m. VMI and Mars Hill meet in the consolation match at 1 p.m.
Ferrum's soccer teams opened the season with shutout victories over Warren Wilson (N.C.) College in Ferrum.
Carrie Early had two goals and two assists as the women's team won 13-0. Daniella Giusto received credit for the shutout for the Panthers, who also got two goals from Faith Sabitine, a goal and two assists from Holly Culpeper and a goal and four assists form Rachel Weber.
The Ferrum men's team won 7-0 with help from Ken Howe's three goals. Will Cunningham, Emerson Umana, Will Council and Danny Bunch also added goals. Goalkeeper Steve Reynolds earned the shutout.
Clemson scored seven second-half goals in routing Radford 8-0 in soccer in a season opener for both teams. Jimmy Glenn scored three goals the Tigers, and teammate River Guthrie added two. Clemson outshot Radford 21-4.
Virginia Tech's women's volleyball team split two matches in the Georgia Kickoff Tournament, beating American 15-11, 15-3, 15-10 and losing to Duke 8-15, 7-15, 13-15. The Hokies (2-2) had 33 kills against Duke and 48 against American. Heather Berglund led Tech with 22 kills in the two games, and Jenni McFadden had 19.
