HIGHER AIR FARES HERE AGAIN; TWA LEADS OFF

Trans World Airlines said Friday it was raising one-way fares $10 and advance-purchase, round-trip prices $20. After initially balking, many competitors decided to follow the increases.

The higher fares are to begin today. Continental Airlines said it would also raise prices; Delta and American airlines said they would follow the increase only on advance-purchase tickets.

Northwest Airlines said it would not follow the increase because with so many discounts in effect, it would be meaningless. America West Airlines was studying the increase Friday.

USAir and United Airlines, which have agreed with the Justice Department not to discuss fare increases before they take effect, would not disclose their plans.
