LATE SHOT SINKS KNIGHTS

Angie Simpkins' shot at the buzzer lifted unbeaten Auburn to a 55-53 victory over visiting James River on Monday night in a non-district girls' high school basketball game.

James River led 26-24 at halftime and 43-38 at the end of the third quarter. With 14 seconds remaining in the game, Auburn (3-0) inbounded the ball and had a shot blocked with four seconds to play. The ball was deflected to Simpkins, who put up a 10-footer from the center of the lane.

Simpkins, a senior point guard, finished with a game-high 18 points. The Eagles' Lori Lyons finished with 15 points and eight rebounds, and Sherry Smith had eight assists and five points.

Theresa Hickman led the Knights (0-3) with 17 points, Angie Johnson had 15 and Laura Cook had 12. \

Shawsville 39

SHAWSVILLE - Marilea Hale scored 27 points, including 10 in the crucial fourth quarter, as the Highlanders defeated the Shawnees in a non-district game.

Glenvar (3-1) led 29-27 going into the fourth quarter and closed the door on Shawsville (0-3) by grabbing eight offensive rebounds. Hale was 6-of-10 from the free-throw line in the quarter.

Robin Burdette paced the Shawnees with nine points. \
