NOT NIKES IN ROBBER'S SHOE BOX

A Salem shoe store was robbed Sunday afternoon by an armed man who fled with a shoe box full of cash, police said.

The man entered Pic 'N Pay Shoes in the 1300 block of West Main Street about 3:40 p.m. and placed a box of shoes on the counter.

He then pulled a large semiautomatic pistol from his waistband and told the clerk to give him cash from the register, said Sgt. Mike Fisher of the Salem Police Department.

After ordering the woman to go to the back of the store, he fled with an undisclosed amount of money stuffed in the box. There have been no arrests. No one was injured.

In other police reports:

A Roanoke woman was stabbed twice in the left hand Saturday afternoon by a man who then followed her to the hospital in an effort to continue the argument.

Tamie T. Gravley, 21, of Elm Avenue told police her attacker was a friend. She said she was cut twice on the hand after throwing her arm up to protect herself. Charges are pending against the man, who left the hospital when security guards were called.

A homeless man was charged with wounding a Roanoke police officer who arrested him over the weekend on a charge of public drunkenness downtown.

Harry Owen Carter, 41, was charged with malicious wounding. Officer B.H. McGee was struck in the face Friday while processing Carter in the docket area of the Roanoke City Jail. McGee was treated at Community Hospital for a cut on his face.
