OBIT COOK, THOMAS E.

COOK, Thomas E., 61, of Blacksburg, Director Emeritus of University Counseling Services at VA Tech, died Sunday, September 12, 1993 at his home. Mr. Cook was a native of W.Va. and a graduate of Concord College. He earned his masters degree from North Carolina State University and his doctorate from the University of Missouri. He began his association with Virginia Tech as a Counseling Psychologist in 1964. A long time member of the American Psychological Association and the College and University Counseling Centers Directors Association, he has contributed significantly to his professional organizations. He has served on and chaired the College and University Counseling Center Accrediting Board, sat on the Commission on Campus Mental Health of the American College Health Association, and has been president and executive board member of the International Association of Counseling Services. Mr. Cook has authored numerous publications and presented frequently at local, state and national conferences. During his tenure at Virginia Tech, he has positively influenced and assisted many students. He was preceded in death by his mother Dorothy Lester Cook. Surviving are his wife, Mary Arena Cook; a son, Samuel R. Cook, Tucson, Ariz.; his father, Carl M. Cook; one sister, Jayne C. Penny, both of Tampa, Fla. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, September 15 at 11 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church with Father Donald LeMay; officiating. Interment will follow in Westview Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to New River Valley Hospice, Inc., 1806 Price's Ford Road, Blacksburg, Va. 24060. The family will receive friends Tuesday from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at McCoy Funeral Home with a prayer service beginning at 8 p.m.
