Galax's Tom McKnight and Roanoke's Mike Smith both failed to make the qualifying cut at the 13th U.S. Mid-Amateur men's championship in Eugene, Ore.
McKnight shot rounds of 80-73, while Smith carded rounds of 78-76. The cut to make the low-64 and match play was 152.
Roanoker Ned Baber will be among 160 players teeing off today in the first round of qualifying for the 39th U.S. Senior Amateur men's championship at Farmington Country Club in Charlottesville. The low 64 players after two rounds of qualifying will advance to Wednesday's first round of match play.
