CHILD, FATHER DIE WHEN MOM FORGETS CIGARETTE

A 9-year-old girl and her grandfather died in a house fire caused by a cigarette left in a room by the girl's mother, police said.

Sheila Hundley, 36, told authorities she lit a cigarette in the den shortly after returning home, then walked out of the room and left the cigarette behind early Saturday, police spokeswoman Lynn James said. When Hundley returned, the room was ablaze, James said.

She tried but failed to extinguish the fire.

Hundley escaped serious injury, but her daughter and father died in their bedrooms. The victims were identified as Sonja Hundley and her 70-year-old grandfather, Eddie L. Manley Sr.

Two other family members - Sonja's sister and an uncle - who lived in the house were not there when the fire broke out, James said.

James said Hundley faces no charges.
