ODU EDGES TECH TO WIN STATE GOLF

Old Dominion put together a 2-over-par 290 final round on The Homestead's Lower Cascades course Tuesday to win its second consecutive Virginia Intercollegiate golf championship.

The Monarchs' Mike Stamberger, Scott Carlson, Josh Cupp and Matt Kohut produced a two-day score of 587, defeating Virginia Tech by six shots. Richmond (597) finished third on the 6,619-yard, par-72 course in Hot Springs.

After an opening 297, completed Tuesday because of Monday's heavy rain, Old Dominion fought back rallies from Virginia Tech and Richmond in the second round to win its fourth title.

Stamberger carded a 2-under 70, Carlson a 71, Cupp a 74 and Kohut a 75.

Medalist honors went to Carlson, who was 1-under 143 for two rounds. Richmond's Steve Jamroz was next at 147.

The six players sharing third place at 149 were Stamberger, Tech's Sean Farrell and Mark McGuire, Richmond's Gage Weeks, James Madison's Pleasant Hughes and Old Dominion's Jason Piurkoski.
