TECH BREAKS INTO RANKINGS IN CROSS COUNTRY

Virginia Tech, coming off a second-place finish at the Mountain West Classic in Missoula, Mont., has been ranked in the U.S. Cross Country Coaches Association poll.

The Hokies are ranked No. 14, with 171 points. At the Mountain West Classic, they finished ahead of 10th-ranked Michigan, 15th-ranked Oregon and 24th-ranked Idaho State.

Mike Cox, Tom Lankowicz and Joe Edwards have been the top performers for coach Steve Taylor's team, which will compete against Duke, Navy and Tennessee on Saturday in Knoxville, Tenn.

In Blacksburg, freshman Chris Chladek scored the only goal as Virginia Tech shut out West Virginia 1-0 in men's soccer.

Chladek's fourth goal came off an assist from Michael Gredlein at the 19-minute, 51-second mark of the first half.

Brian Bulger made seven saves en route to his fourth shutout of the season for the Hokies (7-2). In Richmond, top-ranked Virginia used goals from

Mike Fisher and Claudio Reyna to defeat Richmond in men's soccer.

Jeff Causey made four saves en route to the shutout for the Cavaliers (9-0). The Spiders' record fell to 2-5-2.

Andy Smith had two goals and one assist as Roanoke College routed visiting Shenandoah 7-0 in men's soccer.

Anibal Avalos added a goal and an assist for the Maroons, who have won eight consecutive games since a season-opening loss.

Former North Cross standout Dustin Fonder extended his streak to eight games with at least one point by assisting on a goal for Roanoke.

Shenandoah's record is 3-6.

In Greensboro, N.C., Shag Drewry scored four minutes into overtime off a feed from Alan Christensen to lift Washington and Lee to a 1-0 victory over Guilford in Old Dominion Athletic Conference men's soccer.

The Generals (3-5 overall, 2-1 in the ODAC) outshot the Quakers 26-18 but couldn't break through until Drewry scored his third goal of the season.

Guilford is 1-6-1, 0-3-0.

Jason Dowdy and Marjorie Rutherford of Cave Spring were the overall winners in a high school cross country meet held at the Baptist Home in Salem.

Dowdy led the boys' competition with a time of 17 minutes, 2 seconds on the 3.1-mile course.

Rutherford won the girls' division in 21:48.
