NCAA DENOUNCES FIGHTING

The NCAA Presidents Commission on Wednesday denounced the rash of fighting during last weekend's football games and called for schools across the country to toughen standards of conduct.

The 44-member group of university presidents and chancellors, in its regular fall meeting, said there is "disturbing evidence of the disregard of sportsmanship and adherence to essential standards of competitive and personal conduct."

Saturday's Miami-Colorado game was interrupted by a fight and a dozen players were ejected. Brawls also broke out in the N.C. State-North Carolina game, the Duke-Virginia game and the Maryland-Virginia Tech game.

The commission's statement calls for:

Every NCAA institution, conference and other appropriate group in the NCAA to take prompt action to prevent recurrence of last weekend's incidents.

Every institutional chief executive officer to meet with the athletic director and the football coaching staff to discuss standards of conduct expected by the university.

The officers of every conference to instruct its football officials to act decisively and severely to enforce proper competitive behavior.

The NCAA Football Rules Committee to review promptly the rules of proper conduct to determine if they are severe enough.
