OBIT TAYLOE, EUGENE GIBSON

TAYLOE, Eugene Gibson, ("Gene"), Master Sgt. U.S. Army Retired, 74, of Roanoke, died Wednesday, September 29, 1993 in the V.A. Medical Center in Salem. He retired in 1964 with 20 years service in the U.S. Army serving in World War II and the Korean Conflict. He was a Distinguished Member of the Transportation Corp. Regiment and a recipient of the National Am Vet Outstanding Leadership Award for V.A. Volunteer Service, and the Governor's Award for Volunteers Excellence. He was Past Commander of the V.F.W. Post #1264. He was the Founder, Past President and Commander of Post 40 and Department Commander of the Virginia AmVets. Mr. Tayloe was also a former recruiting officer for the Roanoke district. He was a member of the American Legion Post #248, where he was Past Commander and a member of the Korean War Veterans Association. He was a Past Commander of the D.A.V. Chapter #3 in Roanoke and served as Past Senior Vice President for the State of Virginia D.A.V. He was a member of Lakeland Masonic Lodge #190 A.F.& A.M.; Murray Royal Arch Chapter #22; Bayard Commandery #15 K.T.; Roanoke Consistory-Scottish Rite & the Kazim Temple. He was a member and deacon of Waverly Place Baptist Church and a member of the Roanoke Chapter of the National Railroad Historical Society. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Police. Surviving are his wife, Gladys Saum Tayloe of Roanoke; three sons, Gene A. Tayloe of Charlotte, N.C., Lanny F. Tayloe of Cleveland, Tenn., Jimmy W. Tayloe of Salem; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held in Oakey's South Chapel at 10 a.m. Saturday with the Rev. Charles Hoffler and Dr. George K. Bowers officiating. Masonic graveside services will follow in Sherwood Burial Park with Military Honors to follow. The family will receive friends at Oakey's South Chapel. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Eugene G. Tayloe Memorial Fund, c/o Veterans Medical Center Volunteer Service, Salem, VA 24153.
