OBIT THOMAS, IRENE E.
THOMAS, Irene E., 85, of Route 1, Rocky Mount, died Tuesday, September 28,
1993. She was a teacher in Kansas and Fairfax, Va. for many years and attended
Kansas State University at Emporia, Kan., and George Washington University in
Washington, D.C. In Fairfax County, Mrs. Thomas helped pilot a program in
Language Experience in Reading (LEITR) developed by Encyclopedia Brittanica
and was a member of International Chapter P.E.O Sisterhood. She was a faithful
member of the Gogginsville United Methodist Church, Rocky Mount, Va., an
active member of the U.M.W. at Gogginsville and was a devout Christian wife
and mother. Survivors include her husband, Frank Thomas, an educator, whom she
married on May 19, 1935; two daughters, Dr. Leann J. Martin of New Orleans,
La. and Linda Lou Block of Manassas, Va.; two sisters, Mrs. Helen Ashworth and
Mrs. June Rasch, both of Lawrence, Kan.; five grandchildren, Anne McCool,
Anacortas, Wash., Scott S. Martin, Seattle, Wash., Rhonda L. Dickey, Boones
Mill, Va., Matthew T. Powell, Roanoke, Va. and Eric D. Powell, Fredericksburg,
Va.; seven great-grandchildren; and a host of nephews and nieces, relatives
and friends. Funeral services will be conducted 11:00 a.m., Saturday, October
2, at Gogginsville United Methodist Church, Rocky Mount by the Rev. Stanley
Wright with interment to follow in Mountain View Memorial Park. The family
will receive friends Friday from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Gogginsville United
Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorials be
made to the Gogginsville United Methodist Church, Route 4, Rocky Mount, Va.
