ROANOKE CYCLIST IN CRITICAL CONDITION AFTER VAN ACCIDENT

A Roanoke man who was hit by a van while riding his bike Wednesday remains in critical condition at Roanoke Memorial Hospital.

Bobby L. Wheeler, 30, was struck on Orange Avenue and 19th Street Northeast on Wednesday evening. Wheeler was taken to Roanoke Memorial, where he was still listed in critical condition in the intensive-care unit Thursday night, according to hospital officials.

Police said Wheeler was crossing Orange Avenue, heading north from the southside curb, when he was hit by a van driven by Michael Lynn Leonard, 29, of Roanoke. Leonard was driving west on Orange Avenue.

The impact knocked the bike into a lot near the intersection, police said.

No charges were filed.
