CROUCH CONFIRMED AS U.S. ATTORNEY

A Martinsville lawyer who served as Henry County's court clerk for nine years before going to law school was approved Friday by the Senate Judiciary Committee to serve as U.S. attorney for Virginia's Western District.

The committee's unanimous approval of Robert P. Crouch, 45, for that post and Helen F. Fahey, 51, as federal prosecutor for state's Eastern District were announced Thursday by U.S. Sen. Charles Robb, D-Va.

"I expect that the nominations will be greeted by the full Senate as enthusiastically as they were by the Judiciary Committee," said Robb. "They are both qualified, experienced and capable individuals who will serve the commonwealth well."

Crouch practiced law at the Martinsville firm of Young, Haskins, Mann and Gregory.

Fahey has been commonwealth's attorney in Arlington since 1986. In the high-profile "Southside Strangler" prosecution, she was the first Virginia prosecutor to win a case using genetic evidence.
