BICYCLIST'S CONDITION IMPROVES

A Roanoke man who was hit by a van while riding his bicycle on Orange Avenue was in very serious condition in the neurotrauma unit at Roanoke Memorial Hospital on Friday night.

Hospital officials said the condition of Bobby L. Wheeler was upgraded from critical Friday.

Wheeler, 30, was struck on Orange Avenue at 19th Street Northeast on Wednesday evening.

Police said Wheeler was crossing Orange Avenue, heading north from the south curb, when he was hit by a van driven by Michael Lynn Leonard, 29, of Roanoke. Leonard was driving west on Orange. The impact knocked the bike into a lot near the intersection. No charges were filed, police said.
