AREA GOLFERS EARN SPOT IN NATIONAL FINAL

Tom Holbrook, head professional at Hidden Valley Country Club in Salem, used a hole-in-one to help his team to a 14-under-par 58 on Saturday and a three-day total of 40-under 176 to qualify for the finals of the Oldsmobile Scramble National Championship.

The tournament, being played on the Palm Course at Walt Disney World in Lake Buena Vista, Fla., concludes with an 18-hole round Monday.

Holbrook and his amateur teammates Mike Brammer, Richie Richardson, Rick Ibes and Greg Fry are in eighth place among 150 teams that qualified for the finals in the gross division.

Holbrook's ace, the fifth of his career, came on the 148-yard third hole.

"It was a low 8-iron that took one bounce and kind of slam-dunked into the hole," he said.
