In New York, Ron Harris, a Navy lieutenant who spent two years in the Persian Gulf, won the New York Road Runners Club Fifth Avenue Invitational mile run. Harris, formerly of William and Mary, was timed in 3 minutes, 58 seconds. He was followed by Paul Vandegrift of Richmond, in 3:58.3, Houssine Siba (3:58.8) of Morocco and Brad Schlapak (3:59.1) of Brighton, Mass.

Lauren Gubicza, a former All-American at Fordham, won the women's mile in 4:37.9. Debbie Marshall of Bridgeport, Pa., was second in 4:38.2, and Julie Speights of Harrisonburg finished third in 4:38.4.
