The monks were exiled from their homeland to India following the Chinese invasion of Tibet in 1959. In their new home, 216 monks re-established the Drepung Loseling Monastery, which now has about 1,500 spiritual aspirants in training.
The traveling group plays 10-foot-long dunchen trumpets, as well as drums, bells, cymbals and gyaling horns; and perform in rich brocade costumes and exotic masks.
The purpose of the performance is "to contribute to healing in the listener and to planetary harmony."
Tickets are available in advance at $8 for students and senior citizens and $10 for other general admission. They are available at Books Strings & Things in Roanoke and Blacksburg, Studios on the Square, Roanoke Natural Foods Co-op, Leed's Music and Nature's Outlet in Salem.
