TECH PLAYERS NET TITLES IN W.VA.

In Morgantown, W.Va., three singles players and one doubles team won their flights as the Virginia Tech men's tennis team made a strong showing at the West Virginia Fall Classic.

Oliver Mayo defeated Mike Dowd of George Washington 6-3, 6-3 to win the No. 3 flight. Teammate Lee Shackelford beat West Virginia's Clay Bibbee 6-3, 6-4 to win flight No. 6 and Adam Gottfried defeated WVU's Rod Stevula 6-7, 6-3, 6-4 at No. 7.

In doubles, Scott Cuppett and Miki Pusztai won the No. 1 flight with an 8-2 victory.

In Fredericksburg, Washington and Lee players swept the singles and doubles titles at the Rolex Division III Southeast Regional women's tennis championships at Mary Washington College.

Marilyn Baker defeated the host school's Leslie Roland 7-6, 6-2, and Baker combined with Julie Ayers to beat Roland and Karen Batz 7-5, 4-6, 7-5.

Baker and Ayers advance to the Rolex National Small College Championships, which will be held Oct. 28-31 in Edmond, Okla.

In Attleboro, Mass., Steve Taylor, Virginia Tech's cross country coach, finished second Sunday at the Ro-Jacks Five-Mile Run.

Ian Shrortala of Finland won the race in 23 minutes, 7 seconds. Taylor was second in 23:30, and Larry Matthews of Britain was third in 23:41.
