OBIT FLESHMAN, DOROTHY L.
FLESHMAN, Dorothy L., 83, of Lynchburg, died Sunday, October 3, 1993, in
Virginia Baptist Hospital. She was the wife of the late Clarence Lee Fleshman.
She was born May 18, 1910, in Gordonsville and was raised in Pembroke. She was
a daughter of the late Averett and Cary Bruce Lumsden. She graduated from
Lynchburg College in 1932. She was Director of Dramatics and taught in the
Pembroke Elementary School from 1935 until her marriage to Clarence in 1940.
She moved to Lynchburg in 1943, joined First Baptist Church and became very
active as leader of a Church Circle for 18 years. She also served as a
Deaconess. She was a secretary of Lynchburg Church Woman from 1956 to 1958 and
served on the Board of Directors of Lynchburg Community Concerts Association.
She was a member of Lynchburg Women's Club and Council of Garden Clubs since
1965. She has served on the Virginia Federation of Garden Clubs Board of
Directors and was a nationally accredited flower show judge with a Masters
Certification. She was Vice President of Virginia Council of National
Accredited Flower Show Judges. She has been a member of the Pioneer Club and
served as President of Lynchburg College Alumni Association. In 1986, she was
awarded the Thomas Gibson Hobbs Memorial Award for her contributions to her
Alma Matter, Church and community. She is survived by her sister, Grace Alice
Lumsden of Lynchburg; one nephew, Frank Mallory Bowlers of Goode; one niece,
Julia Mallory Hall of Martinsville; three cousins, Mary Alice Weaver and
Geraldine Preston McCall, both of Pembroke, Louraine Scott of Fort Lauderdale,
Fla.; three sisters-in-law, Myrtle Fleshman and Una Carper, both of
Waynesboro, Julia Smith of Lynchburg; one brother-in-law, Russell Fleshman of
Peterstown, W.Va. A funeral service will be held 10 a.m. Tuesday, October 5,
1993, in the Diuguid Rivermont Chapel by Rev. Ty Campbell and Pastor of
Emeritus, Dr. Kenneth Bryan. Burial will take place at 3 p.m. in the Birchlawn
Cemetery, Pearisburg. The family will receive friends Monday from 7 to 8 p.m.
at the Funeral Home. Memorial contributions may be made to First Baptist
Church or the American Heart Association.
