No Virginia school has played in the Stagg Bowl, Division III's national championship game, which will kick off at noon Dec. 11 at 8,000-seat Salem Stadium.
Six colleges in Virginia play Division III football, but Emory & Henry was the only one to receive votes in the poll, determined by the NCAA Division III Football Committee.
Bridgewater, Ferrum, Hampden-Sydney, Randolph-Macon and Washington and Lee are the other eligible schools.
Emory & Henry lost the sixth and final spot in the South Region to Millsaps (Miss.). The Majors (3-1) beat the Wasps 34-10 on Saturday in Jackson, Miss.
Washington & Jefferson (Pa.), last year's Stagg Bowl runner-up, earned the top spot in the South Region, followed by Frostburg (Md.) State and Wilkes (Pa.). All three schools are 4-0.
Last year's national champion, Wisconsin-LaCrosse (4-0) led a strong group in the West Region. The Eagles, the preseason No. 1 team in the nation, were followed by St. John's (Minn.), Redlands (Calif.), Coe (Iowa) and Wisconsin- River Falls, all with 4-0 records.
Four of the six ranked schools in the North Region were from Ohio, led by Mount Union (4-0), a quarterfinalist last year. Defiance (5-0) was third, Wittenberg (4-0) fourth and Heidelberg (4-0) fifth. Albion (Mich.) earned the No. 2 spot.
Montclair (N.J.) State took top honors in the East Region, followed by 1992 quarterfinalist Buffalo State, and Union (N.Y). Rowan (N.J.), which lost to Washington & Jefferson in a semifinal last year, was fourth.
Carey Harveycutter, manager of the Salem Civic Center, said more than 2,000 tickets have been sold for the Stagg Bowl with more committed.
The Old Dominion Athletic Conference and Ferrum have agreed to sell 700 tickets each, and each of the participating schools receives 500 tickets.
Tickets are $8 in advance and $10 on the day of the game, with high school students and youngsters admitted for $5. Tickets can be obtained by calling the civic center at 375-3004.
