TV RETRANSMISSION TALKS NEAR DEADLINE

With less than 24 hours left to form an agreement, WSLS (Channel 10) and Fox affiliate, WJPR/WVFT (Channel 21/27), said Monday they are continuing to negotiate with Simmons Cable TV in Radford.

Under the Cable Act of 1992, all retransmission contracts must be concluded by Wednesday or local channels will go blank.

James DeSchepper, general manager at WSLS, said he sent an offer to Simmons headquarters in Dallas. "What we're asking for is just a pittance," he said.

No Simmons spokesman was available for comment Monday.

WSLS has finalized agreements with all other cable companies in the region, including Cox Cable Roanoke Inc. and Booth American Corp., owner of Salem and Blacksburg cable companies. - Staff report
