CITY COUNCIL WELCOMES HARVEY BACK

Councilman James Harvey returned to Roanoke City Council on Monday after recovering from surgery for lung cancer.

Mayor David Bowers welcomed him back amid applause by other council members and the audience.

Harvey was upbeat, saying he was going to be "around awhile" despite his illness.

"We are going to beat this thing," he said, adding that his surgery went well.

His next step is radiation treatment.

His illness has caused him to miss only one council meeting.

Harvey said he has been flooded with cards and letters from city residents.

He said the publicity about his illness has made him uneasy, but he appreciated the expressions of concern and sympathy.

Meanwhile, Councilman Howard Musser remains in the hospital, recovering from a stroke he suffered in late August.

His family says he continues to improve.
