Radford Community Hospital's Viva Club will offer this course Oct. 20-21, 9 a.m.-1 p.m., at the Norwood Conference Center, 600 Norwood St., Radford. To register, call the Viva Club, 731-2558 by Oct. 18. You don't have to be a Viva member to take this course. Registration is limited to 24 people. There will be refreshments.
These are two-day, state-approved classroom driver-improvement programs designed to help older drivers to update their driving knowledge and skills. The course costs $8 and reviews rules of the road, talks about age-related physical changes which affect driving skills and focuses on defensive driving techniques.

Today's "First Wednesday Wonderings" program at the VIRGINIA CENTER FOR ACTIVE RETIREMENT will be "Why Do People Volunteer?" 9-11 a.m., in conference room F of the Donaldson Brown Center at Virginia Tech. R. Bennett Crawford, a specialist with the Institute for Leadership and Volunteer Development at Virginia Tech, will speak. Cost is $5.

\ NANCY GLISSON, MISS VIRGINIA 1993, will be on hand for a second grand opening celebration at the Virginia Tech Adult Day Care Center later this month for family caregivers and professionals. The "open house" will be Oct. 28, 2-3:30 p.m. at the center, 102 Wallace Hall on the Tech campus. A tour, a slide show, service information and refreshments will be provided. A Tech graduate and fourth runner-up in the recent Miss America pageant, Glisson, an advocate for the elderly, was a volunteer at the center.
