PIONEER GOLF STILL BELONGS TO GLENVAR

Glenvar won its third consecutive Pioneer District golf title and the Highlanders' Nick Varney won the individual crown Tuesday at Countryside.

Varney finished at 2-over-par 73 for Glenvar, which also has won three consecutive regular-season titles in the district. The Highlanders' four-man total was 318 as they beat second-place Covington by 31 strokes.

Ray Harrell shot an 81 and lost a playoff with Bath County's Jamie McElwee for second place as Glenvar also dominated the individual competition. The Highlanders' Chadd Yeatts and Rob Robinson tied for fourth at 82, with Yeatts winning the playoff, and Tommy Lesperance (84) was sixth.

Glenvar and Covington advance to the Region C tournament Oct. 12 at Countryside, along with the following individuals: McElwee, Kenneth Mackey (89) and John Beard (90) of Bath County; T.J. Honaker (89) and John Hull (92) of Highland; and Aaron Duncan (93) of James River.

In other sports:

Roanoke College, which has a school-record 10-game winning streak, is No. 14 in the first NCAA Division III men's soccer poll of the season.

It is the highest ranking in the program's history. The Maroons were as high as No. 15 in 1984, when they finished 13-3-1.

Roanoke, led by senior Dustin Fonder from North Cross, improved its record to 10-1 with a 2-0 victory over Maryville (Tenn.) on Sunday.

Roanoke College won its sixth consecutive women's soccer game, defeating Randolph-Macon Woman's College 4-0 in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference game in Lynchburg.

Susie Dzialo, Robin McLaughlin, Kelly Bulkley and Chris Lever each scored, and Heather Harlan recorded her second shutout for the Maroons (6-4 overall, 5-1 ODAC). Randolph-Macon Woman's College is 4-6, 2-4.

In Rocky Mount, Rachel Weber scored the first three goals and Ferrum went on to a 7-0 rout of Hollins in women's soccer.

Alison DeTurk added two goals for the Panthers (7-4), and Daniella Giusto made three saves en route to her fifth shutout. Hollins' record is 2-7.

In Lynchburg, Jeff Scoutelas scored one goal and set up three as Lynchburg defeated Washington and Lee 5-2 in Old Dominion Athletic Conference men's soccer.

Joe Corba had two goals for the Hornets (4-8-1 overall, 2-4-0 in the ODAC). Dan Rhodes and Shag Drewry scored for the Generals (3-7, 2-2).

Virginia Tech's Laura Hanner has been named the Metro Conference's player of the week in volleyball for the period that ended Tuesday.

Hanner, a freshman setter, was the MVP at the Hardee's/Comfort Inn VT Classic during the weekend as the Hokies (12-7) defeated Evansville, Marshall and East Tennessee State to win the title.

Tech is 10-4 since the Georgetown, Texas, native took over as a starter in the sixth match of the season. Hanner is averaging 8.2 assists overall and 12.0 as a starter for the Hokies (12-7).
