Roanoke City Councilman Delvis "Mac" McCadden will serve as president of the executive committee charged with planning the stage of the Tour DuPont that will run through the Roanoke Valley in May.
McCadden said representatives involved with bringing the Tour to the valley met Wednesday to determine the executive committee, make subcommittee assignments and discuss the route the stage will take through the area.
"The major thing we have to do now is to find out where the money is going to come from," McCadden said. "It may be difficult to do that until we're legitimate and have the route determined."
The executive committee will become legitimate by applying for incorporation with the state before proceeding on major plans for the nation's premier cycling race.
Other members of the executive committee are Bill Carder, general manager of the Radisson Patrick Henry Hotel; Brian Duncan, an assistant director of the Roanoke County Department of Economic Development; and George Clemo, an attorney with the firm of Woods Rogers & Hazelgrove.
The subcommittees will coordinate the site, public relations, fund raising, hospitality, sponsorship and special events.
Mark Dierdorff, president of the Blue Ridge Bicycle Club, will serve as head of the site committee. Dierdorff will work with a planner from Medalist Sports, the Tour's organizer, within the next two weeks to determine the route cyclists will take for the uphill time trial.
"We talked about potential routes . . . that would run through several jurisdictions in the valley," McCadden said. "Within three to four weeks, we're going to have the actual route announced and major sponsors."
At that time, McCadden said, volunteer information will be available.
