PIKALEK STILL BEING HONORED

Lisa Pikalek, a 1992 Virginia Tech graduate, is one of 10 finalists for the 1992-93 NCAA Woman of the Year award.

The award, which recognizes excellence in athletics, academics and community leadership, will be presented at a banquet Nov. 9 in Washington, D.C.

The former Hokies volleyball star graduated with a 3.957 grade-point average in psychology and sociology. She was voted the GTE Academic All-American of the Year for volleyball in 1992 and was the most honored female student-athlete in Tech history.

In other sports:

North Carolina-Greensboro ended the longest winning streak in Radford women's soccer history with a 1-0 overtime victory in Greensboro.

Radford (10-1 overall, 4-1 in the Big South) had won 10 in a row.

The Highlanders had a chance to win the game on a penalty kick in the first overtime, but Spartan goalkeeper Heather Bridgewater stopped Sue Williams' attempt. Kerry Powell scored the winning goal for UNCG (7-5, 4-0) at the 109:35 mark in the second overtime.

In Greensboro, N.C., Dustin Fonder scored four goals as Roanoke College rolled past Guilford 7-2 in Old Dominion Athletic Conference men's soccer.

The Maroons, ranked No. 14 in the NCAA Division III poll, broke a 2-2 tie with five goals in the second half. Nelson Vasquez added a goal and two assists for Roanoke (11-1 overall, 6-0 ODAC).

Guilford's record is 2-8-1, 1-4-0.

In Charlottesville, the Virginia men's soccer team set an ACC record for consecutive victories with a 5-0 rout of West Virginia.

The Cavaliers have won 17 in a row dating to November 1992.

David Fitzmaurice scored the first goal of his career on UVa's first shot of the game. Damian Silvera, Sean Feary, Mike Slivinski and Key Reid added goals for the Cavaliers (11-0), who outshot the Mountaineers 22-4. Brandon Pollard had two assists.

In Blacksburg, Doug Pratt scored all three goals for UNC Charlotte - including the game-winner with 47 seconds left in overtime - as the 49ers edged Virginia Tech 3-2 in Metro Conference men's soccer.

It was the first home loss of the season for the Hokies (7-3, 0-1). Tech got goals from Rob Rubano and Jason Entlich, and Brian Bulger made 13 saves.

Ferrum got two goals each from Rachel Webber and Carrie Early as the Panthers pounced on Averett 8-0 in women's soccer.

Kenny Howe and Leroy Coleman scored goals for Ferrum (3-8) in a 2-1 overtime victory over Averett in men's soccer.

Ferrum's Kevin Niday, a former William Byrd High School standout, has been named the Dixie Conference Rookie of the Week in men's soccer. Niday, a freshman, scored all three goals in the Panthers' 3-1 victory over Guilford on Sept. 28.

The Bluefield College men's basketball team, under first-year coach Walt Ayers, will play an exhibition game at 7 p.m. Oct. 26 at Patrick Henry High School in Roanoke. Admission is free and there will be refreshments and door prizes.

A fan club has been formed for George Lynch, the former Patrick Henry High School and University of North Carolina star who was selected by the Los Angeles Lakers in the first round of the National Basketball Association draft.
