Salem will give away flowers from municipal beds beginning at noon Wednesday at the Salem Civic Center.
Roanoke will give flowers away beginning at 7 a.m. Oct. 15 at the Roanoke Civic Center.
At both sites, flowers will be given out on a first-come, first-served basis. Recipients must provide their own containers.
Available flowers will include many kinds of annuals being removed from municipal beds and hanging baskets, said horticulturists Debbie Sinex of Salem and Marilyn Arbogast of Roanoke.
The flowers are being taken up so the beds can be prepared for winter.
Both cities have offered the flowers to the public for several years rather than disposing of them in landfills. Many of the plants that will be available are roots and bulbs that can be kept over winter and replanted next spring.
