2 U.S. SOLDIERS DIE; U.N. EVACUATES STAFF

Two more U.S. soldiers died Thursday from fighting in Somalia, and the United Nations began evacuating civilian workers from the Somali capital.

One American died in a U.S. military hospital in Landstuhl, Germany, from wounds suffered Sunday in clashes in the capital, Mogadishu.

A mortar attack on Mogadishu's airport wounded 13 soldiers Wednesday night, and one of them later died.

In all, 14 American soldiers have died in fighting this week in Somalia. Six soldiers are still missing and feared dead.

In Geneva, the International Committee of the Red Cross said Thursday that more than 700 Somalis, one-third of them women and children, were wounded in the Sunday-Monday round of fighting and that the Somalis suffered a "high number of casualties." It had no exact figure.

Supporters of fugitive warlord Mohamed Farrah Aidid said in Nairobi on Thursday that 315 Somalis were killed and 812 wounded.

Farouk Mawlawi, a U.N. civilian spokesman in Mogadishu, said nonessential staff were being flown out of Mogadishu to Nairobi in neighboring Kenya. He said he did not know how many people were being evacuated.

It is the second time that the United Nations has had to relocate civilian workers for fear of their safety.
