SPARTANS' LATE SHOTS WON'T FALL; TERRIERS WIN

William Byrd withstood three Salem shots in the final 10 seconds Thursday night to nip the Spartans 55-53 in a high school girls' basketball game.

Jaclyn Banks had 13 points and April Maciel added 12 for the Terriers, who led 42-34 after three quar- ters before the Spartans mounted a rally.

Salem (5-6 overall, 0-1 Blue Ridge District) got a game-high 20 points from Shellie Johnson and 15 from Heather Moore.

Alleghany 61\ Northside 59

COVINGTON - Tricia Rice drove for the winning points with 10 seconds left as the Mountaineers nipped the Vikings in a Blue Ridge District game.

Alleghany (9-3, 1-1) got 21 points from Rice, 12 from Andrea Moore and 10 from Celeste Godfrey.

Northside (8-4, 1-1) worked the ball for a final shot, but Sarah Hicks' try rimmed in and out at the buzzer. Hicks scored 14 points, Michelle Orlando had 14 and Shannon Yopp added 12 for the Vikings.

Glenvar 51\ James River 39

Glenvar used a strong fourth quarter to pull away from James River and gain first place in the Pioneer District.

The Highlanders (8-3, 5-0) led by one at the end of three quarters, but Toree Morris' 3-pointer gave them a six-point lead en route to a 12-point victory.

Glenvar's Kristi Robinson made seven of eight free throws in the fourth quarter and finished with 11 points. Marilea Hale had 17 points and 10 rebounds, and Morris had 12 points.

For James River (5-7, 4-1), Kara Mundy had 13 points, Teresa Hickman had 12 and Angie Johnson had eight points and 11 rebounds.

Parry McCluer 68\ Craig County 46

BUENA VISTA - Misty Snider's 22 points led the Fighting Blues past the Rockets in a Pioneer District game. Crystal Humphries had 18 and Stephanie Rhodes 15 for Parry McCluer (6-6, 3-3). Chrissy Robertson had 21 points for Craig County (2-8).

Lord Botetourt 81\ Rockbridge County 32

LEXINGTON - Jenny Gates led an offensive assault with 20 points as the Cavaliers, ranked second in Timesland, defeated the Wildcats in a Blue Ridge District game.

Sara Moore added 13 points, Ashley Moore had 11 and Summer Plunkett had 11 as Lord Botetourt (12-1) led 40-19 at halftime and never looked back.

Rockbridge County (5-7) got 13 points from Sara Dooley.
