BUFFALOES TRAMPLE GREEN WAVE 84-36

Floyd County bolted to a 35-point halftime lead and swamped Narrows 84-36 in a Mountain Empire District girls' basketball game Thursday night.

Lynette Nolley scored 14 of her game-high 22 points in the first quarter as Timesland's fourth-ranked team raced to a 28-10 lead. Floyd County (11-1 overall, 9-0 in the district) led 49-14 at halftime. Nolley also had eight rebounds in the game, and Carrie Chaffin added 13 points.

Narrows got 12 points from Melinda Fleeman and 11 from Melissa Lawrence.

Shawsville 55\ Auburn 46

SHAWSVILLE - The Shawnees rallied from an eight-point halftime deficit to beat the Eagles in a Mountain Empire District game.

Kelley Ryan and Robin Burdette scored at the end of the third quarter to give Shawsville (7-4, 7-3) a 39-36 lead. Six players scored at least one basket in the fourth period as Shawsville held on to win. Ryan, a guard, and Burdette, a center, each finished with 13 points and 12 rebounds.

For Auburn (8-3, 7-3), Angie Simpkins had 15 points and Lori Lyons and Renay Gardner each scored 10.

Christiansburg 45\ Carroll County 15

CHRISTIANSBURG - Rebecca McNeil scored 17 points as the Blue Demons whipped the Cavaliers in the New River District opener for both teams. Christiansburg (4-6, 1-0) used an 18-3 third quarter to pull away.

Giles 62\ Fort Chiswell 48

PEARISBURG - Tomika Saunders had 19 points and 10 rebounds as the Spartans beat the Pioneers in a Mountain Empire District game. Gina Claytor added 12 points and 10 rebounds for Giles (3-8, 3-7). Amy Lyons had 10 points for Fort Chiswell (5-6, 5-5).

Liberty 51\ Appomattox 46

BEDFORD - Felicia Miller scored 18 points and freshman Sue Cowlbeck grabbed 17 rebounds as the Minettes edged the Raiders in a Seminole District game. Liberty (9-3, 9-3) scored 22 points in the second quarter to take control. Appomattox is 7-5 overall and in the district.

Galax 46\ Grayson County 17

GALAX

Tammy Cox scored 17 points, matching the Blue Devils' output by herself, as the Maroon Tide rolled in the Mountain Empire District. Jaclyn Dickens added 10 points for Galax (8-3, 8-2). Grayson County's record is 1-10 and 1-10.

Amherst County 47\ Staunton River 38

AMHERST - Stephanie Wood and Terri Neighbors poured in 10 points each as the Lancers upset the Golden Eagles in a Seminole District game. Amherst County (6-5, 6-5) used 30 second-half points to pull out the game. Tanya Nelms led Staunton River (9-2, 9-2) with 11 points.
