ALLEGHANY PREVAILS

Tricia Rice drove for the winning points with 10 seconds left Thursday night as Alleghany nipped Northside 61-59 in the Blue Ridge district.

Alleghany (9-3 overall, 1-1 in the Blue Ridge) got 21 points from Rice, 12 from Andrea Moore and 10 from Celeste Godfrey.

Northside (8-4, 1-1) worked the ball for a final shot, but Sarah Hicks' try rimmed in and out at the buzzer. Hicks scored 14 points, Michelle Orlando had 14 and Shannon Yopp added 12 for the Vikings.

Alleghany seemed to take control by outscoring Northside 19-8 in the third quarter, but the Mountaineers lost four starters to fouls in the fourth quarter.

Northside came roaring back with 23 points in the fourth quarter, and the score was tied at 59 before Rice's winning shot.

Rocky Gap 49\ Bland 37 BLAND - The Rockets used a tough box-and-one defense to keep it close for a half, but the Eagles pulled away for a Mountain Empire District victory. Bland (0-12 overall, 0-10 district) held Nancy Tupper to 11 points with its gimmick defense, but Christie Whitt, who had 14 points, and Amanda Clark, who had 11, picked up the slack for Rocky Gap (7-6, 6-4). Rachel French led the Rockets with a game-high 19 points.

Martinsville 77\ Dan River 33

MARTINSVILLE - The Warriors led 26-5 after one quarter and 47-9 at halftime to put away the Piedmont District game early against the visiting Wildcats. Keenya Hairston scored 22 points for Martinsville (9-3, 9-1) and Samantha Ferguson added 18.

Parry McCluer 68\ Craig County 46

BUENA VISTA - Misty Snider's 22 points led the Fighting Blues past the Rockets in a Pioneer District game. Crystal Humphries had 18 and Stephanie Rhodes 15 for Parry McCluer (6-6, 3-3). Chrissy Robertson had 21 for Craig County (2-8).

George Wythe 50\ Lebanon 31

WYTHEVILLE

The Maroons (2-9, 2-9) recovered from a shaky start to pick up their second victory of the season, a Hogoheegee District decision over the Pioneers. Misty Puckett hit 3-pointers on the first two shots of the game as Lebanon built a 12-2 lead. In the second quarter, George Wythe began to find the openings in the Pioneers's 1-3-1 defense and capitalized to take a 24-18 halftime lead. Stacey Green led the Maroons with 15 points.

Covington 33\ Highland 24

MONTEREY - JoAnn Helton scored eight of her team-high 16 points in the third quarter as the Cougars pulled away for a Pioneer District victory. Covington (7-3) outscored the Rams 13-2 in the period to break open a tight game. Amy Arbaugh led Highland (2-8) with 16 points.

Laurel Park 54\ Fieldale-Collinsville 36

COLLINSVILLE - Torsheda Dillard scored 22 points as the Lancers (8-5, 7-4) whipped the Cavaliers (4-7, 4-6) in a Piedmont District game.

Wednesday's game

Franklin (W.Va.) 50, Bath County 25: In Hot Springs, Heather Thompson scored 13 points to lead a balanced attack as the visitors from West Virginia routed the Cougars in an interstate game. Bath County is 3-9; Franklin 7-1.
