OBIT CLARKSON, FRED VERNON

CLARKSON, Fred Vernon, 74, of Daleville, passed away Friday, October 8, 1993 at his home. He was preceded in death by a brother, Talbert N. Clarkson, who died in 1964 and his wife, Hazel Sublett Clarkson, who died in June of 1978. Born March 28, 1919 in Laurel Branch, Monroe Co., W. Va., he was a son of the late Oliver Marshall and Maxie Pearl Clarkson. He was a 1939 graduate of National Business College and attended Auburn College (now Auburn University) in Auburn, Ala. During WWII, Mr. Clarkson served in the U. S. Navy. After the war, he worked during the day and attended Roanoke College at night under the American Institute of Banking program. He attended Rutgers University and later the Virginia School of Bank Management at the University of Virginia, graduating in 1964. In May, 1971, he entered the graduate school of Banking of the South at Louisiana State University, graduating in 1973. Mr. Clarkson's long career in banking began in 1939 in New Castle, Va. at the First National bank of New Castle. He later worked in the communities of Wytheville, 1946-47 and Hillsville, 1947-57. He completed his banking career in Troutville, Va., working from 1958-84 at First National Bank of Troutville (now Nationsbank) where he served as President and Chief Executive Officer. Active in civic and business affairs, Mr. Clarkson was well known for his work in churches, civic organizations, youth groups and community development programs. He was a past president of the Troutville Lions Club, past president of the Troutville PTA, and a past member of the Board of Directors of the Botetourt Country Club, Shenandoah Valley, Inc., 4-H Educational Camp Center and held executive positions with many organizations. He was active in the work of the Botetourt Co. Republican Party and was a founder of the annual ham supper. He was currently serving on the board of directors of the Roanoke-Botetourt Telephone Company, and was a member of the Roanoke Chapter of the Antique Automobile Club of Virginia. He was a member of the Daleville Church of the Brethren. He was a 32nd degree Mason and a Shriner. Surviving are one daughter, Carolyn Kinzie Carpenter and her husband, Thomas Sidney Carpenter, III, Staunton; one son, Schuyler H. Clarkson, Daleville; three grandsons, Paul S. Kinzie, Jacob R. Kinzie, and Thomas S. Carpenter, IV; two sisters, Ruby Hylton, Pearisburg, Orean Lipes, New Castle. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the Daleville Church of the Brethren, Daleville, Va. 24083, or to the Troutville Volunteer Rescue Squad, P. O. Box 11, Troutville, Va. 24175. Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Monday, October 11, 1993, at Daleville Church of the Brethren by the Rev. J. Richard Gottshall and Dr. Harry Y. Gamble. Interment with Masonic grave rites will follow in Sherwood Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Oakey's North Chapel.
