Richard A. Wolters, 72, was flying his Titan Tornado ultralight when it spun and tumbled to the ground about 7 p.m. Saturday off Virginia 605, about 3 miles east of U.S. 301, state police said.
"The altimeter was locked at 850 feet," said N.F. Johnson of the state police. "But it may have been jarred and the needle stuck."
Wolters was taken to a Medical College of Virginia Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 8:08 p.m.
The Federal Aviation Administration will investigate the crash.
Wolters, an author and hunting dog enthusiast, wrote 15 books, including the training manuals "Gun Dog" and "Water Dog." He co-founded the North American Hunting Retriever Association. - Associated Press
