DRUNKEN-DRIVING ARRESTS DOWN

Drunken-driving arrests in Virginia dropped in 1992 for the third straight year, a study shows.

The state's Alcohol Safety Action Program, which conducted the study, said it showed that the decrease occurred across Virginia and was not limited to specific regions.

Arrests for driving under the influence fell from 45,309 in 1991 to 40,107 last year, said William T. McCullum, ASAP's director.

"That's the lowest total on record I know of for the past 10 years," he said.

Alcohol-related crashes also were down, according to the Department of Motor Vehicles.

There were 379 people killed in 13,830 alcohol-related accidents from July 1, 1992, to June 30, 1993, compared to 429 deaths in 14,894 alcohol-related accidents the year before, the department said. - Associated Press
