HISTORY IN MAKING

Miami's victory Sunday was the 322nd in Don Shula's NFL coaching career, leaving him two away from tying George Halas' record of 324 NFL.

Marcus Allen's 9-yard touchdown run in the third quarter was the 101st of his career, tying him with Steve Largent for seventh on the all-time list.

Nick Lowery's winning field goal made him the fifth player in NFL history with more than 1,400 points. He has 1,402.

Washington's Art Monk caught three passes, and now has at least one reception in 153 straight games, the second-longest streak in NFL history. Largent holds the record of 177.

Pittsburgh's Gary Anderson had three field goals against the Chargers, which moved him past Lou "The Toe" Groza into ninth place on the NFL's all-time list with 265. Anderson is 8-for-8 in field goals this season. \

Super subs

Scott Secules is in his sixth year in the NFL, but he was among the league's least-experienced backup quarterbacks when he replaced Drew Bledsoe at the controls of New England in the second half of the Patriots' 23-21 victory over Phoenix. Secules was on Miami's injured-reserve list all last season, and had thrown only 70 passes the previous four years, completing 33. Secules hit on 12 of 20 passes for 214 yards in two quarters, establishing career highs in all three categories.
