ROANOKER CALLED UP BY INDIANS

Roanoke's Charlie Manuel has reached the Major Leagues for the second time in his baseball coaching career.

The Cleveland Indians hired Manuel as their hitting instructor, a position he held from 1988-89 before becoming a Class AAA manager.

"I've been waiting for this for a long time. Hopefully, I can stay up there for awhile," said the 49-year-old Buena Vista native.

Manuel, who guided the Indians' Class AAA affiliate in Charlotte, N.C., to the International League title this year, also will be the Indians' offensive coordinator.

Manuel managed Charlotte to a 92-56 record and the International League title. The Knights hit 199 home runs and led the league in hitting and runs scored.

Manuel managed for Cleveland's AAA team when it was in Colorado Springs in 1992. That team won the Pacific Coast League championship.
