NORTHSIDE GOLFER BEATEN IN PLAYOFF

Appomattox's Faber Jamerson beat Northside's Brian Hill on the second hole of a sudden-death playoff to win the Region III high school golf championship Monday at Countryside.

Each player bogeyed the first hole after finishing even on the par-71, 6,028-yard course. Jamerson birdied No. 2 and Hill parred to finish second.

William Byrd's Ryan Ketron, the 1992 state Group AA champion, finished third at 72.

Brookville, which tied for second at the Group AA tournament last year, won the region by three shots over 1992 state champion William Byrd.

Brookville and Byrd advance to the state tournament next week at Bowling Green Country Club in Front Royal.

Byrd's Chris Turner and Brookville's Wes Cothran and Ryan Ferguson, who finished in the top 10, go to state with their teams.

Other top 10 finishers headed to state play include Lord Botetourt's Mark Sweeney, Bassett's Eric Pitches, Jefferson Forest's Brian Glass and Magna Vista's Dwayne Dodson.

In other golf:

In Lawrence, Kan., Virginia Tech is in third place, two shots behind host Kansas, after two rounds at the Jayhawk Invitational.

Tech shot rounds of 304-286 Monday on the par-72 Alvamar Country Club course under cool, breezy conditions and is four shots behind leader Oral Roberts.

Darren Griff of Oral Roberts leads the individual competition at 2-under 142. Tech freshman Curtis Deal is in a three-way tie for second after rounds of 73-72.

The Hokies' Brian Sharp and Sean Farrell shot identical rounds of 77-70, David Havens carded 77-74 and Matt Martin shot 79-77.

The final round is scheduled for today.
