OBIT SHANK, HENRY DEWITT JR.

SHANK, Henry DeWitt Jr., 82, of Salem, died Sunday, October 10, 1993 at Richfield Nursing Center in Salem. He was preceded in death by his wife, Vivian, and by his parents, Henry D. and Elizabeth P. Shank, all of Salem. He is survived by two sons and their families, DeWitt, Merle, and Katherine Shank, Lewisburg, W.Va.; and David, Sue, and Chelsea Shank, Hampton. Also surviving is one brother, Benson P. Shank, Vinton. Mr. Shank was a lifelong resident of Salem. He was elected Deacon in the Salem Presbyterian Church, president of the Salem Kiwanis Club, and Salesman of the Year of the Southern Home Furnishings Association. He was a 50 year life member of the Taylor Lodge #23 AF & AM, and the Grand Chapter of the Royal Arch Masons in Virginia. He was a 1933 graduate of Virginia Tech in Business Administration. In his senior year, he was manager of the Va. Tech varsity football team. In 1940, he was a clerk of the Senate of Virginia. He served in the U. S. Army in the European Theater of Operations in WWII, rising to the rank of Major. He had, at one time, been a partner with his father and brother in Moir & Trout Co. Wholesale Grocers in Roanoke, and partner, then owner of the Shank Furniture Co. in Salem. A graveside service for family members will be held at East Hill Cemetery, 10 a.m. Wednesday, October 13, 1993, followed by a memorial service at 11 a.m., for friends and family, at the Salem Presbyterian Church. Dr. Leighton Culler will officiate services. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home, Salem. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Salem Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 536, Salem, Va. 24153.
