TERRIERS TURN BACK NORTHSIDE

William Byrd took control in the fourth quarter by applying fullcourt pressure and switching defenses to turn back Northside 57-43 in a Blue Ridge District girls' basketball game Tuesday night on the Vikings' floor.

Jackie Banks had 21 points and nine rebounds, Kelli Runyon had 10 points and eight steals, and Cathy Smith added 15 points for William Byrd (10-3 overall, 3-0 Blue Ridge).

Glenvar 54\ Highland 25

MONTEREY - The Highlanders bolted to a 29-8 lead at halftime and never looked back in notching a Pioneer District victory.

Marilea Hale had 25 points for Glenvar (9-3, 5-0) and Toree Morris added 12 points.

Highland (2-9, 1-7) got 11 points from Amy Arbaugh.

James River 44\ Covington 23

COVINGTON - Stifling James River defense held Covington to three first-half points and the visiting Knights proceeded to the Pioneer District victory.

Heather Moore scored 12 points and Michele Brown came off the bench to add 10 as the Spartans rolled past the visiting Wildcats for a Blue Ridge District victory.
