OBIT CLAYTOR, RALPH VERNON

CLAYTOR, Ralph Vernon, 70, of Roanoke, passed away Sunday, October 10, 1993, at his home. He was a son of the late Dr. John Bunyan (J.B.) Claytor Sr. and Roberta Woodfin Claytor, born September 12, 1923. He was preceded in death by his wife, Marian Anderson Claytor in August of 1983; brother, Dr. Frank William (F.W.) Claytor in October 1972; and sister-in-law, Natalie Beale Claytor in November 1983; father-in-law, James R. Anderson in November 1973; sister-in-law, Beverly A. Ritson in December 1975; brother-in-law, Julius A. Thomas in March 1982. During World War II he was a captain in the Army Air Force and was one of the first black pilots. He was a master mechanic and was owner and operator of Claywood Esso Station in Gainsboro and on Williamson Rd. and Orange Ave., N.W. Later he became manager of GEMCO and was founder and president of the accounting firm "VER-FAY INC." at the time of his death. Survivors include one daughter, Faye E. Claytor, Roanoke; one son, Vernon F. Claytor and his wife, Randi F. Claytor, Richmond; four sisters, Bernice C. and Dr. Lewis F. Boddie, Los Angeles, Calif., Roberta C. and John S. Palmer, Martinsburg, W.Va., Ruth C. and Attorney Henry G. Marsh, Saginaw, Mich. and Dr. Margaret C. Woodbury and Dr. David H. Woodbury, Ann Arbor, Mich.; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Dr. John B. and Ruth W. Claytor, Dr. Walter S. and Eiko K. Claytor, all of Roanoke; mother-in-law, Mrs. Willie Anderson; brother-in-law, Gerald Anderson, both of Roanoke; sister-in-law, Iris L. Thomas, New Rochelle, N.Y.; in-laws, Mr. and Mrs. Elmo R. Fitts, Norfolk; a host of aunts; nieces; nephews; cousins and friends. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to the American Cancer Society in the name of Ralph V. Claytor. A memorial service will be conducted Wednesday, October 13, 1993, at 4 p.m. at the Fifth Avenue United Presbyterian Church with Dr. Vernie L. Bolden officiating.
