Foundation's grants go to 5 charitable groups

The Foundation for Roanoke Valley, under its C. Mead Boxley Memorial Fund, has approved grants for five Roanoke Valley charitable groups.

The grants total $2,000. The foundation, a publicly supported and tax-exempt philanthropic organization, received requests for more than $14,000.

The Boxley fund helps meet the needs of disadvantaged children under 6. It also supports agencies that focus on research and treatment of spinal-cord injuries.

The Blue Ridge Independent Living Center received $250 to buy devices to help people with spinal cord injuries with daily tasks.

The Roanoke Valley Therapeutic Riding Program received $250 so more children and adults with spinal cord problems can participate in horseback riding programs.

Greenvale School received $500 to help start a sick child care program for low-income working parents.

Northwest Child Development Center received $500 to replace a storage building that houses equipment for its summer science program and cots and other supplies.

The West End Center for Youth received $500 for school supplies, reading materials, snack foods, transportation and admission fees for children under 6 at the center.
