WEST SALEM EX-PRINCIPAL BRUBECK DIES

William Brubeck, who was principal of West Salem Elementary School for 17 years, died Tuesday at Lewis Gale Hospital.

Brubeck also was principal of E. Wilson Morrison Elementary in Front Royal for seven years before coming to Salem in 1968.

Brubeck, 73, was principal of West Salem Elementary from 1968 until his retirement in 1985. For his first 15 years there, the school was part of the Roanoke County system. In 1983, Salem annexed the school's attendance area.

Brubeck retired from the county school system and went to work for Salem, staying on as principal of West Salem, said Marty Robison, director of classified personnel and community relations for Roanoke County schools.

"Bill made so many fine contributions to our school system," Robison said.

Ron Wall, director of operations for Salem schools, said Brubeck was an asset to education and to the school system.

Brubeck was a member of the West Virginia Football Hall of Fame. He played football and basketball and participated in track at Furman University.

A memorial service for Brubeck will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at the John M. Oakey & Son Chapel.
