OBIT BRUBECK, WILLIAM OXLEY SR.

BRUBECK, William Oxley Sr., 73, of Salem, died Tuesday, October 12, 1993, at Lewis Gale Hospital. He and his family came to Salem in 1968, when he became principal of West Salem Elementary School. After seventeen years as principal at West Salem Elementary, he retired in 1985. Before coming to Salem, he served as a principal in Sumter, S.C. and Front Royal, Va. He was a graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School in Beckley, W. Va., where he was a member of the Football Hall of Fame. He then continued his studies at Augusta Military Academy, then received an A.B. and Master's Degree from Furman University. While at Furman University, he was a member of the football, basketball, and track teams; served as president of the student body in his senior year; and was a member of the Quaternion Club and a member of Who's Who of American Colleges and Universities. He attended and was a member of Salem Baptist Church, where he was president of his Sunday School class. He was also a member of Salem Kiwanis Club and served on its board. He was preceded in death by his father, Wade S. Brubeck. Survivors include his wife, Mary Helen Brubeck; two sons, Earl G. Brubeck, Williamsport, Md., William O. Brubeck Jr., Alexandria, Va.; his mother, Katherine Brubeck, Beckley, W.Va.; a brother and his wife, Wallace and Jean Brubeck, Wayne, W.Va.; a grandson, Jeremy Earl Brubeck, Williamsport, Md.; one aunt, Mrs. Lorraine Brubeck Watson, St. Petersburg, Fla.; one uncle and his wife, Woodrow and June Oxley, Scott Depot, W.Va.; two nephews, and four great-nephews. A memorial service will be held on Friday, 11 a.m. at the John M. Oakey & Son Chapel, by the Rev. Lew Bennett. The family will receive friends at the John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the West Salem Elementary School Memorial Fund, 520 N. Bruffy St., Salem, VA 24153.
