WALESA NAMES NEW POLISH PRIME MINISTER

President Lech Walesa, a staunch anti-Communist, reluctantly named a leftist farmers' party leader as the nation's new prime minister Thursday.

His appointment of Polish Peasants' Party chief Waldemar Pawlak opened the door for post-Communist Poland's first leftist government.

Walesa did not want to appoint a leftist government and had been expected to try to pass on that mission to Parliament. But he told a news conference he would not block the democratic process, and his spokesman later announced Pawlak's appointment. - Associated Press
