CSX FOUND LIABLE IN AMTRAK COLLISION

Passengers smiled, wept and threw their arms around each other Thursday after a federal jury found CSX rail company liable in the April 1992 collision and derailment of an Amtrak passenger train.

"I hope I never have to go through that again," said Marlene Williams of the Bronx in New York City, "the train wreck, the trial . . . all the tension."

Amtrak was cleared of any fault in the accident.

The jury deliberated about seven hours before ruling that CSX was negligent in the crash, which occurred at the Bell King Road crossing when an Amtrak train slammed into a dump truck, killing the driver and injuring 54 passengers.
